Eric Hamrin is a Political Affairs Officer in the Policy and Best Practices Service of the UN Department of Peace Operations. He was formerly with the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) in various capacities, first as a field officer in Tajikistan and later with the Special Monitoring Mission to Ukraine (SMMU). In the SMMU, he was a monitoring officer in the conflict-affected areas of eastern Ukraine and then a reporting officer and political analyst at mission headquarters in Kyiv. He also worked as a policy support officer for the Eastern Europe desk in the OSCE Secretariat’s Conflict Prevention Center in Vienna. Prior to his career with the OSCE, he worked from 2009 to 2012 at the U.S. State Department as a Foreign Affairs Officer, overseeing law enforcement, criminal justice, and border security assistance programs in Central Asia and the Russian Federation. During this period, his overseas assignments included Dushanbe (Tajikistan), Bishkek (Kyrgyz Republic), and Moscow. He previously worked for three years as a White House reporter for The Asahi Shimbun, a leading Japanese newspaper. He holds master’s degrees from The George Washington University and the University of Virginia, and a bachelor’s degree from St. Olaf College.
